The dragonfly and the turtle

Cane Bayou, Mandeville Louisiana (a little paddle with little animals)

05-26-2008

There were hundreds of little frogs in the grass in the water this trip.  Some would pop beneath the surface of the water when you got too close.  Sometimes they would jump on your boat and you would have a little ride-along until they got too hot or bored.  The frogs did _not_ like the open water at all and scrambled for the safety of the grass should they find themselves exposed.

The water on the lake was choppy, and many parts of the bayou were very shallow (1 1/2 - 2 feet deep)

Alligators spotted by us = 0.  Alligators that spotted us = ?  What does an Alligator nest look like?

It is always a good thing when the kayaks stay on the car, and the sky stays blue.

The water was very dark around the put-in.  At times, back exploring the marsh, it was clear and shallow enough to see the bottom but generally it was murky.

Near the sides of the bayou, this grass grew thick in the water (beneath the red boat.)
Coasting here, you began to notice hundreds of the little frogs.

Heading back to paddle another day (and have lunch at La Correcha in Hammond- no 'gator rating but it was pretty good)
